How Do U.S. Companies Invest in Germany?

Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI), the German government agency tasked with attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), presents a new study on FDI in Germany.

Check this out: GTAI has released its first worldwide study of the reasons why foreign companies invest in Germany. The agency surveyed 23 countries for this report.

Three highlights:

  • More than three million people in Germany owe their jobs to foreign direct investment. Most U.S. companies investing in the country do so to capitalize on German know-how.
  • When U.S. companies invest abroad, Germany ranks fourth by number of investments in comparison with other countries. That puts the United States behind the United Kingdom, China and India.
  • The situation is different for R&D, however. Foreign subsidiaries of U.S. companies have invested nearly $ 46 billion in R&D, of which Germany was able to attract the largest amount: $ 7.3 billion.
